Shiatsu (prounounced shee at su) is a Japanese therapy, the translation actually means ‘finger pressure’. It is often described as originating from acupuncture, a Chinese therapy that dates back thousands of years – stone needles have been found at Neolithic sites dating from 8,000 BC. In modern times (within the past 100 years), this has been combined with the Japanese physiotherapy / massage therapy called Anma – this has formed the therapy system of Shiatsu. Shiatsu uses a combination of Five Element, Traditional Chinese medicine and Zen Theories. The Practitioner accesses Qi (Prana in Ayurvedic medicine) within the bodies’ meridians by using touch in the form of massage, stretching, physiotherapy techniques and pressure.
Acupuncture is a system of inserting fine disposible needles based on theory from Traditional Chinese Medicine. There are a number of techniques used to diagnose a ‘disharmony’ and the relevant acupuncture points are used to re-harmonise the bodies energetics, Qi.
